The Hammer Falls
Hithlóna (“misty/foggy island”) is a shrouded Volcanic island where the Sea of Chaos and Great Sea converge between Ulthuan and the Old World (closer to the Old World near Estalia). Originally a High Elf stronghold, but abandoned many centuries ago due to pressures in other fronts and raids from worshippers of chaos. Since then, it has been a pirate hideout thanks to the unforgiving coral reefs and heavy fogs that surround the island. Long left abandoned, Orc tribes began to spring up from the mold of pirate ships docking for winters. The taint from chaos raids introduced transformations into the local animals as well, and over centuries Beastmen colonies emerged.
Dwarven miners during this long period of time had been following a Gromril vein from the surrounding mountains of Karak Izor to the coast, and all the way under the ocean’s floor. Such a large project began before Skaven had appeared in the region, and their appearance forced cooperation with the dwarven fleet at Barak Varr to ship the Gromril deposits back to the dwarven realms rather than return through the tunnels to Karak Izor. Contact stopped while the miners were under the sea until such a time that they could surface to land. Hithlóna was the hypothesized location which would act as a future meeting place for the dwarven fleets to ship the Gromril to and from. The island was unknown or forgotten by most, however, so its location was unknown to the dwarven fleet. Unfortunately the dwarves disturbed an undead tomb (most likely a sunken colony of ancient Araby) in their travels under the ocean, and it was a mad dash to continue following the vein and seek a surface out. Through bloody battles and rushed mining, the dwarves finally found themselves surfacing up to Hithlóna, only to find their return route blocked by undead hordes. Contact with the fleet could not be accomplished by returning through the mines, so the dwarves would need to establish a fleet of their own to return home from this mysterious island.
About this time, the High Elves became aware of the Dark Elf ploy to establish a base on the island to facilitate an attack on their brethren. The Dark Elves had got word of Hithlóna from some pirates they had encountered, and saw it as an opportunity to develop a hidden base of military operations from which to attack. The High Elves in an attempt to spoil this plan sent a force to the island based on their ancient historical texts on its whereabouts, only able to decipher its location with great effort. The island does not appear on any maps but for those of smugglers and ancient high elf tomes. Due to its terrible weather patterns, heavy fogs for most of the year, and its small size combined with the difficulty in reaching it through coral reefs have all kept it from being very well known. Upon arrival, the High Elves became aware of the Beastmen and Orc tribes that had sprung up in the many centuries it had been since High Elves last lived on the island. Word of Dwarves emerging from tunnels from the sea were spreading as well. The Dark Elves abandoned their mission to colonize the island, but the High Elves could not leave such Destructive neighbors reigning over a nearby island. None of these forces could be trusted to hold an island so close to Ulthuan. To make matters even more interesting, the fog and ocean began to part, drawing everyone’s attention immediately to the approaching Lizardmen army marching on the sea floor towards the island.
